Pick HubSpot if you need a CRM that sales reps will work in every day, want to start free, or need more than five users. Pick ActiveCampaign if email sequences and behaviour-based automation drive your revenue and a small team runs it, because Plus at $49 a month gives you unlimited automation actions that HubSpot only matches at Professional, $90 per seat plus a $1,500 onboarding fee.
| ActiveCampaign | HubSpot CRM | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting price | $15/mo (1,000 contacts, 1 user, annual) | Free; paid from $9/seat/mo |
| Free plan | No (14-day trial) | Yes (2 users, 1,000 contacts) |
| Pricing model | By contacts, plus $12 per extra user | By seat, contacts not metered on the CRM |
| Sales pipeline | Basic deals; full pipelines are an add-on | Included on every tier |
| Marketing automation | Unlimited actions from Plus ($49) | Simple at Starter; full workflows at Professional ($90/seat) |
| Best for | Marketing-led small teams | Sales teams and all-round small businesses |
Both promise "marketing and sales in one place" and get there from opposite directions. HubSpot began as a CRM with a generous free tier and added marketing, service and content products around one contact record. ActiveCampaign began as an email automation tool and added a CRM layer so automations could create deals and hand them to a person.
That history explains the pricing and the strengths. Below we compare verified September 2026 prices, then ease of use, the features that decide the purchase, integrations and support. Scores come from our ActiveCampaign review (4.1) and HubSpot review (4.6), both scored with the same weighted rubric.
Pricing
The two models do not line up, so we show each on its own terms and then compare realistic teams. HubSpot charges per seat per month, billed annually: five Starter seats are 5 × $9 = $45 a month, and five Professional seats are 5 × $90 = $450 a month plus a one-time $1,500 onboarding fee. ActiveCampaign charges by contact count with users bundled in: Pro at 1,000 contacts is $79 a month billed annually and includes 3 users, so a five-person team pays $79 + 2 × $12 = $103 a month.
| HubSpot tier | Per seat / mo | 1 seat | 5 seats | 20 seats | Terms |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | — (2-seat cap) | — (2-seat cap) | 1,000 contacts, no expiry |
| Starter | $9 | $9 | $45 | $180 | $15 if billed monthly |
| Professional | $90 | $90 | $450 | $1,800 | + $1,500 onboarding once; $100 monthly |
| Enterprise | $150 | $150 | $750 | $3,000 | + $3,500 onboarding once |
| ActiveCampaign plan | Users included | 1,000 contacts (annual) | 5,000 contacts (monthly) | 10,000 contacts (monthly) | Terms |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 1 | $15 | $99 | $189 | 5 actions per automation; $19 monthly at 1,000 |
| Plus | 1 | $49 | $179 | $239 | Unlimited automation actions; $59 monthly at 1,000 |
| Pro | 3 | $79 | $259 | $469 | Advanced segmentation; $99 monthly at 1,000 |
| Enterprise | 5 | $145 | $469 | $739 | SSO, custom objects; $179 monthly at 1,000 |
HubSpot prices from hubspot.com, September 2026, billed annually. ActiveCampaign 1,000-contact prices from activecampaign.com (annual); larger contact tiers and monthly figures from third-party pricing trackers, August 2026, because the vendor does not display them before checkout. Extra ActiveCampaign users $12 a month each. Enhanced CRM add-ons (Pipelines about $68, Sales Engagement about $111 a month) are tracked, not published.
Three teams show how the answer changes. Two people with 1,000 contacts pay $0 on HubSpot Free and $15 to $49 on ActiveCampaign. Five people who need real automation pay $103 a month on ActiveCampaign Pro against $450 a month plus $1,500 once on HubSpot Professional: $1,236 against $6,900 in year one. Twenty reps with 10,000 contacts pay $180 a month on HubSpot Starter for a full pipeline, while ActiveCampaign Pro at 10,000 contacts is $469 plus 17 extra users at $12, about $673, before the Pipelines add-on.
Compare like for like: HubSpot's $9 Starter buys a CRM seat, not marketing email at scale; adding Marketing Hub is a second product with its own contact-based pricing, so the fair automation match-up is ActiveCampaign Plus against HubSpot Professional. On the other side, ActiveCampaign's contact count includes unsubscribed and inactive contacts, so a neglected list pushes you up a tier. Work out both bills at the size you will be in a year with our CRM cost breakdown.
Ease of use
HubSpot scores a perfect 5.0 and ActiveCampaign 3.9, and the gap is real. A new HubSpot account went from signup to imported contacts, a renamed pipeline, connected email and a booking page in under two hours with no documentation. The defaults are sensible, the in-app guidance is good, and a non-technical owner can run it without an admin. Complexity grows at Professional, but even there HubSpot is gentler than most platforms.
ActiveCampaign's automation canvas is the most readable we have used: triggers, waits, conditions and actions read left to right like a flowchart. Everything around the canvas is harder. Tags, lists, custom fields, scores and segments overlap, and an account without a naming scheme accumulates hundreds of tags within a year. Setting up a domain, a form and a five-step welcome series took us an afternoon; feeling in control of the account took a month.
Features that matter
Strip both feature lists back to what decides the purchase and six items remain.
- Sales pipeline. HubSpot: Kanban deal board, multiple pipelines from Starter, tasks and a shared inbox, on every tier. ActiveCampaign: basic deal records on every plan; multiple pipelines, deal-stage automation and pipeline reports in the Pipelines add-on. Clear HubSpot win.
- Marketing automation. ActiveCampaign: unlimited actions from Plus, behaviour triggers from site and event tracking, split-testing whole automations at Pro, a large recipe library. HubSpot: simple automation at Starter, full branching workflows at Professional. ActiveCampaign wins on depth per dollar.
- Email sequences for reps. HubSpot: Professional ($90). ActiveCampaign: Sales Engagement add-on, price not published. Neither is cheap; HubSpot's is the more complete rep tool.
- Segmentation. ActiveCampaign's tiers are defined by it: limited at Starter, standard at Plus, advanced at Pro, premium with custom objects at Enterprise. HubSpot's lists and filters are good and free, but behaviour-based segmentation across a store or app is where ActiveCampaign is stronger.
- Reporting. HubSpot: standard dashboards free, custom reports and forecasting at Professional. ActiveCampaign: campaign and automation reports standard, attribution at Pro, custom dashboards in a $159 add-on.
- AI. HubSpot's Breeze assistant is free and researches companies, drafts email and summarises records. ActiveCampaign's AI drafts copy and suggests automations. HubSpot's is more useful for a sales team.
Running a small business?
Our small-business guide ranks eight CRMs by what a team under 25 people actually needs, with pricing verified this month.
Integrations
HubSpot scores 5.0 and ActiveCampaign 4.6, and both are excellent. HubSpot's marketplace lists more than 2,000 integrations, and the ones small teams rely on — Gmail, Outlook, Google Calendar, Slack, Zoom, QuickBooks, Stripe, Shopify, Zapier — are native and available on every tier including Free. Because HubSpot is so widely used, most other business tools ship a HubSpot connector.
ActiveCampaign's directory lists hundreds of native connections with a strong ecommerce and events bias: Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Stripe, PayPal, Calendly, Typeform, Zoom, the major webinar platforms, Facebook Lead Ads and Google Ads, plus webhooks inside every automation. It also integrates with Salesforce and Pipedrive, which is how many sales-led companies use it: ActiveCampaign nurtures, a CRM closes.
Support
HubSpot scores 4.5. Free users get community and knowledge-base support; paid tiers add email and in-app chat, with phone support at Professional. HubSpot Academy — free, well-produced courses on the product and on sales and marketing generally — is the best learning resource of any CRM we cover, and the partner agency network is large.
ActiveCampaign scores 4.0. Every paid plan gets email and chat support, a large help centre and free one-on-one onboarding sessions; Enterprise adds a dedicated account team. Response times were good in our experience, but complex automation questions were often answered with articles. Plenty of agencies specialise in the product if you want hands-on help.
Who should pick ActiveCampaign
- Businesses where email sequences, launches or abandoned-cart flows create most of the revenue
- Teams of one to five people who want automations, not reps, to do the volume
- Ecommerce stores and course sellers that want store events to trigger follow-up
- Anyone who needs unlimited automation actions for $49 a month rather than $90 per seat plus onboarding
- Companies happy to run a separate CRM for a sales team and connect the two
Who should pick HubSpot
- Sales teams that need a pipeline, deal board and shared inbox every rep can use
- Two-person businesses that want to pay nothing while they find out what they need
- Teams with more than five users, where ActiveCampaign's per-user fee and add-ons stack up
- Owners who want the easiest all-round platform and the largest integration marketplace
- Businesses that expect to add a service or content function within the year
Decision rule: ask what your team does all day. If the answer is "move deals through stages, call people and log it", choose HubSpot and start free. If the answer is "build campaigns and let the sequences sell", choose ActiveCampaign and budget for Plus. If you honestly do both with a team of five or more, HubSpot Starter for the CRM plus ActiveCampaign Plus for nurture costs about $94 a month and beats either Professional tier.
Frequently asked questions
Is ActiveCampaign cheaper than HubSpot?
For a small list, no: HubSpot is free for 2 users and 1,000 contacts, and Starter is $9 per seat, while ActiveCampaign starts at $15 a month for 1,000 contacts and one user. For automation, yes: ActiveCampaign Plus at $49 gives unlimited automation actions, while HubSpot's full workflows need Professional at $90 per seat plus a $1,500 onboarding fee.
Does ActiveCampaign have a free plan like HubSpot?
No. ActiveCampaign offers a 14-day free trial with Pro features, 100 contacts and 100 sends, then Starter at $15 a month billed annually. HubSpot's free CRM has no expiry and covers 2 users and 1,000 contacts, so a two-person team that wants to pay nothing should start on HubSpot. See our best free CRM guide for the other free plans.
Is ActiveCampaign a better CRM than HubSpot?
No. HubSpot includes a full pipeline, deal board, tasks and a shared inbox on every tier including Free, and supports as many seats as you buy. ActiveCampaign includes basic deal records, but multiple pipelines and sales engagement are Enhanced CRM add-ons, and plans include only 1 to 5 users. ActiveCampaign is the better automation engine, not the better CRM.
Which is easier to use, ActiveCampaign or HubSpot?
HubSpot. It scores a perfect 5.0 for ease of use against ActiveCampaign's 3.9. A new HubSpot account went from signup to imported contacts, a renamed pipeline and connected email in under two hours. ActiveCampaign's automation canvas is very readable, but tags, lists, fields and segments take longer to learn.
Can I use ActiveCampaign and HubSpot together?
Yes, through ActiveCampaign's native integrations and Zapier, but it usually means paying twice for overlapping features. A cleaner split is HubSpot for the CRM plus ActiveCampaign for nurture, or HubSpot alone if you can live with simpler automation at Starter. For other pairings, see our ActiveCampaign alternatives.
Conclusion
HubSpot is the better CRM and the easier platform, and it is free to find that out. ActiveCampaign is the better automation engine per dollar, and it stays reasonable at the tier where HubSpot's Professional pricing becomes a project. Neither replaces the other; they simply start from different ends of the same customer record.
If a sales team will live in the tool, start on HubSpot Free today and price Professional at your headcount before you depend on sequences. If your list is the business, trial ActiveCampaign, budget for Plus and give your tags a naming scheme on day one.
